“SOUTH AFRICAN WINES”
Written by Joshua Luman
taly, France, California, Spain, Argentina . . . home to some of the finest wines in the world. But these guys aren’t the only hotspots producing powerhouse vino. South Africa is slowly and silently making its way to the helm of the wine connoisseur’s radar. Much like the rise in popularity (and price!) in recent years of wines from Australia and South America so too are South African wines on the climb. The great news for consumers is that they still have not become so en vogue that pricing has gone out of control.
Although South Africans have been producing wines since the 1600’s, it is only in recent years that they have started to gain international attention and acclaim. Most of the country’s grapes are grown around the Cape Town area, with approximately 60 different appellations. The South African climate is ideal for growing grapes given its Mediterranean temperatures and proximity to the Indian and Atlantic oceans. While the South Africans make almost all the varieties of wine found across the globe, they are truly making a name for themselves internationally producing Chenin Blanc, Riesling, Cabernet, Merlot and Pinotage.
The South African wines are beautiful and sophisticated, and full of old-world charm. Yet innovation and modern techniques have given them their own unique stamp on the world of wines. Enjoy these fabulous wines at an even more fabulous price while you can. It’s not going to be long before they join the ranks of the other top producing wine regions. These beauties are like a late round NFL draft pick from an unknown college. It’s only a matter of time before they score the winning touchdown and rise to fame.
Remember, find wine that YOU love, and drink plenty of it!![]()
