Sam Colonna’s Family Celebrates 100th Memorial Birthday
August 14, family and friends gathered at the Bluffton Cemetery to celebrate Sam Colonna’s 100th birthday.
Sam was born in Wassawodox, Virginia, and came to Bluffton
in 1948 as a bulb and flower transport contractor for Cornelis Van Duyne, a native of Holland who started a large bulb farming business in Pritchardville and on the Hodge Farm, Buck Island Road. He later married Nonie Johnson and settled in Bluffton.
Sandie Colonna coordinated the memorial birthday party and was assisted by sisters Peggy Schultz and Polly Yeager. The Nonie Johnson cemetery lot was decorated with fresh flowers, ferns, and balloons. A large urn was packed with chilled champagne and everyone toasted Sam with crystal stems. Sandie read All The Way from Oscar Frazier’s Poetic Readings followed by Carlos Schultz reading Fisherman’s Prayer by Laura Leidew. Solemnity gave way to stories about Sam with many saluting him as one of Bluffton’s most thoughtful and generous citizens, and others telling humorous hunting and fishing stories. The ceremony ended with a final champagne salute and a hearty singing of Happy Birthday.
Following the ceremony, the guests gathered at Rosemary’s Sunset for a delicious home-on-the-river supper.
Family birthdays are always celebrated with a full blown party; thus, it was only natural that family and friends celebrated the memory of one of Bluffton’s best, Sam Colonna, on his 100th birthday.
