19th-Century Glass from Savannah Collections
Exhibition on view at the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences
Nineteenth-century glassware owned by prominent Savannahians such as the Telfair, Owens, Gibbons, and Stiles families will be featured in the Telfair Academy’s Drawing Room from September 1 – December 19. Clear, colored, etched, cut and uncut glass on display will show a sampling of this delicate house ware. Comparisons among several pieces in the show will exemplify the range of styles and craftsmanship available in the nineteenth century. Pieces from two different table settings belonging to the Owens and Stiles families, for example, share the same beautiful color and pattern (red/grapes and leaves), but each have distinguishing features that reflect the tastes of their owners. Organized by the Telfair Museum of Art.

September 12 – January 20, 2008
Philip Morsberger: The Sixties
Exhibition on view at Telfair’s Jepson Center for the Arts
Augusta-based artist Philip Morsberger (b. 1933) is a prolific painter who has worked and held influential teaching positions in America and Britain for over forty years. During his long career Morsberger has never been subservient to any one style of painting; his work has evolved through a number of distinct phrases that have embraced realism, abstraction, and the American comic-strip tradition. Philip Morsberger: The Sixties focuses on Morsberger’s work from a productive decade of the artist’s early career, much of which is concerned with the volatile issues of that decade. Morsberger’s sixties works recall a vital and turbulent time in American history.
