Greater Bluffton Pathways

Greater Bluffton Pathways has been monitoring “the shoulder widening” along Rt. 46 leading into Bluffton, since last summer. We notified local and state officials when we found that the road and shoulders were not wide enough, and now that sufficient shoulder width has been added, the surface quality, unevenness, and unattractiveness are important issues. South Carolina Department of Transportation, assures us that the work will be completed to our satisfaction. As a reminder, this wide shoulder on Rt. 46, when completed, is recommended for adult experienced cyclists. We highly recommend that any cyclist riding along Rt. 46 ride on the right side of the road, wear a helmet, use a rear view mirror, wear brightly colored clothing, and avoid riding at night.
A ten-foot wide multi-use pathway along the eastern side of Buckwalter Parkway between Rt. 46 and Shell Hall has been funded and will be put up for bid in March. We fully expect it to be built this spring. This pathway will be for walkers, rollerbladers, and families riding their bicycles.
The three foot shoulders along parts of Rt. 278 are NOT recommended for cyclists.
The four foot shoulders along the newly widened Rt. 170 between Oldfield and the Broad River bridge are clean, wide enough for adult experienced cyclists and enjoyable on Sunday mornings when traffic volume is lighter.
As the weather gets warmer we will try to have some local bike rides for our members. Greater Bluffton Pathways is an advocacy organization whose mission is to find ways “to safely connect people and places in greater Bluffton with pathways and walkways.”
We need your help.Hope to see you at our monthly meetings. We think you will find them interesting. Mark your calendar for March 8, April10, May 10, June 14, etc. Bluffton Town Hall, 5:00 PM.
