Serving Greater Bluffton Since 1987

The Bluffton Eccentric was the first and only newspaper the town of Bluffton has had in fifty years. We felt such a kinship with them that we asked Graham Bullock, publisher of The Bluffton Eccentric, if we could resurrect articles from previous issues and republish them. Graham graciously gave his permission and loaned us volumes of old papers. It has been a treat for me to read them and it is with great honor that I get to share them with everyone again. So, kick back, relax and get ready for a blast from the past.

Christmas Parade Day in Bluffton (1988)

#

luffton’s Christmas Parade always delivers a dose of the weird, wacky and wonderful; much to our delight , last Saturday was no exception.

In high Bluffton bravado the traditional baby brigade, bows and band were seen. But this year the irrepressible bird of the burg, the Bluffton buzzard traded his brief appearance for a bevy of Bluffton beauties.

When Jill Roberts, (self-coronated Miss Brighton Beach), Shere Colborn, (self-coronated Queen of Bluffton) and Sandy Guhl (self-coronated Miss Estill Beach) rounded the corner of Calhoun Street and Bridge Streets in regal splendor atop a teal Cadillac convertible, their royal subjects were sent into a round of side-splitting laughter. Putting us back in touch with the doll-on-the-bed image Erma Bambeck sometimes refers to, it was reminiscent of a time when a woman’s worth was determined by beauty pageants. They were fabulous; they stole the show; what a hoot! Their farce was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in the kingdom. And we thought we were electing a mayor, not a queen.
